Renaissance Humanism
"Homo sum, humani nihil a me alienum puto." -Terence "I am a man, I think nothing human alien to me." The humanist movement was principally a late-medieval revival of classical antiquity and patrology, directed through the linguistic skill of "good letters", (pure classical grammar). To this movement was applied the idea of "ad fontes" (back to the sources) or the search for classical and patristic manuscripts to be examined and emulated. The implications were profound and felt in every known discipline and civic arena, from philosophy to statecraft to exegesis and history. Standing side by side with the educational plan, the ideology of what we know as humanism, which reveres human dignity and capability (remarkably cohesive with Christian virtue) was both the impetus and product of the classical revival.
