To which is added, an Appendix... by the Reverend Benjamin Pye.  London: C. Bathurst, 1766. [BOUND WITH] BURTON, JOHN (1696-1771). Papists and Pharisees Compared: or, Papists the Corrupters of Christianity. In a Discourse on Matthew XV, &c. (London: J. Rivington, 1766. First Edition). 8vo, [xxiv + 225pp] & [64pp]. Bound in contemporary vellum, five raised bands, upper front joint splitting. Both titles are quite scarce. The first work is the English translation of an early life of Pole by his former secretary, Bishop Ludovico Beccatelli. The second work was originally a sermon given by Burton at either London or Oxford. It was written as an anti-papal response to Beccatelli's life of Pole.

This anti-Catholic work from Methodist preacher, Issac Lansing, purports to show the purpose of romanism to destroy public schools, the wickedness of the Jesuits, the pope as the enemy of civil and religious liberties and the American constitution and law, and the pagan morality that Rome would teach youth. The book is filled with factual inaccuracies and crowd-pleasing diatribe.

Founded in 1820 by Henry Southern, The Retrospective Review focused on literary criticism of 17th- and 18th-century literature, with an emphasis on British works, though not disregarding foreign and even classical pieces. It provides an outstanding selection of 19th-century literary criticism.
