Top edge finely gilt. Quarter leather with marbled boards. 5 raised bands with gilt-stamped decoration in compartments. Full color and b&w plates. With marker ribbon. Binding is sturdy and interior is clean and bright. Slightly ex-library, with gold numbers to spine and fine bookplate to pastedown. Spine is sunned. Insignificant rubbing to exterior. Altogether in good condition. Philippe de Commynes is often considered the first truly modern historian, applying methodology not used since the days of the classical historians. He was an eminent member of the court of Louis XI before falling into disfavour and composing this work. It is considered to possess a highly critical view of the regime of Louis XI and, like Machiavelli, aims to instruct the reader in statecraft.

Bindings are intact and firm; slight cracking to upper joints with light chipping to spine ends, and small piece missing from lower spine of Volume II. Library markings on title-pages and small engraved bookplates to front pastedown. Faint hand-written call numbers to lower spines. Text is unmarked and mostly clean, with scattered foxing and tanning throughout. Very scarce.
