Chez Marc Bordelet, 1727. Leather. Used - Very Good. Item #156584
12mo, 232 + 196pp (two books bound in one volume). Full-leather hardcover with five raised spine bands and tooling to boards. Orléans was a Jesuit who wrote many saints’ lives as well as numerous books on historical topics. This volume contains lives of two Jesuit saints, Aloysius Gonzaga and Stanislaus Kostka, which were first published separately, in 1685 and 1672 respectively. Subsequently, they were sometimes printed together. In this copy, however, while both works were published by the same house in the same year, it appears that they were originally printed separately and re-bound as one much later. Each work has its own title page. More tellingly, there is a distinct contrast in condition between the endpapers and the book block: the former are pristine, and the latter is characteristically aged. Overall, the book is in very good condition. Pages are slightly tanned and occasionally spotted, with mild soiling to fore-edge. Inscription to title page: “Les Dames religieuse du Sacré Coeur…” Small bookplate to front pastedown: “Academy of the Sacred Heart, St. Joseph, MO.” Excellent, solid binding. Boards lightly bumped at corners and minimally rubbed at edges. First spine band slightly worn. Spine label, “Vie de S Louis G,” apparently grafted from original binding.
