S. M. De Pratis [Notre-Dame-des-Pres], 1896-1907. Leather. Used - Good. Item #175399
Large 8vo (28 x 21cm). 15 Volumes. Carthusian binding of quarter mottled calf with marbled boards. Marbled endpapers, four raised bands, and two black morocco labels with gilt lettering to the spine of each volume. A few volumes have sustained some moisture damage to the boards and endpapers, and some tearing and chipping to the paper over the boards. The calf spines, though lightly worn, are in beautiful condition. Denys Van Leeuwen (or Leuw, Lieuwe) was the great Carthusian theologian and mystic and has been remembered by posterity as the 'Doctor Ecstaticus'. As a Carthusian, he spent much of his time in prayer but, amazingly, he also found ample time to study (he read all the great works of theology up to his time) and to write (his Opera omnia comprises 25 folio, or 41 quarto, volumes). Our set of 15 volumes constitutes his work on the Sacred Scriptures.
